What you'll do

Viasat, Inc. seeks a Data Protection Coordinator within its corporate legal department to work on a diverse range of privacy, artificial intelligence, data governance, and information and cyber security compliance initiatives to support the company’s fast-growing global business. The successful candidate will be able to interact with a diverse group of stakeholders across Viasat’s Operations, Security, Legal, Engineering, and U.S. and international business segments, as well as with external legal counsel.   

 

This position is primarily an administrative and tactical role that requires excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, assertiveness, and follow-through, with direct frequent exposure to stakeholders within multiple Viasat departments, with opportunities to apply strategic thinking and influence data protection initiatives. You must be diligent and proactive, demonstrate excellent judgment, be comfortable learning and leveraging new workplace IT applications, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a collegial, fast-paced team environment.

 

This role will report to the Associate General Counsel, Data & Privacy Office.


The day-to-day

The responsibilities of this role will include:

  • Privacy Compliance Support: Viasat’s Data and Privacy Office oversees a diverse set of compliance assets, internal and external-facing policies, procedures and software tools, and internal and external-facing online resources that require periodic review and updates (and account for dozens of jurisdictions and languages). This role will support as follows
    • Conduct Privacy Office asset reviews with Viasat privacy attorneys to ensure accuracy and ongoing fit for purpose, and take active role in asset update
    • Coordinate Privacy Notice translations, visibility and distribution to appropriate team
    • Support compliance forums, including coordination with business segments to ensure compliance solutions are appropriately deployed and documented
    • Support completion of annual and ad hoc registrations with applicable data protection authorities
    • Support Viasat’s personal data recordkeeping activities, including oversee audits and records of processing updates across all business groups, and engage internal data owners for update
    • Support on response to customer and employee data subject access requests
  • Administrator Role: Serve as administrator of Viasat’s established Data Access Steering Committee and the AI Governance Committee, including
    • Manage Committee assets
    • Ensure employee-facing resources remain up to date, accurate, fit for purpose, and are presented in a manner that enables practical use
    • Manage internal-facing inboxes, fielding and responding to questions and comments, and identifying and coordinating as needed with the appropriate internal subject matter experts
    • Coordinate policy and compliance documentation reviews, including by enlisting appropriate stakeholders to ensure that policies remain up to date and reflect current state thinking, and capture feedback from key stakeholders
    • Coordinate and run weekly meeting(s), including (1) prepare and distribute agendas, schedule key participants, and verify ownership and completion of follow up actions; (2) run/facilitate meetings in accordance with agenda; (4) document discussion topics and action items/next steps; and (4) communicate action items/next steps/conditions/resolutions.
    • Manage the project/solution review process for the Committees, including (1) coordinate with Committee members to ensure reviews are completed in a timely manner; (2) conditions are documented in a source-of-truth repository; (3) communicated to appropriate stakeholders; and (4) and audited to confirm follow-through and implementation.
    • Support development of employee training and requirements/guidance documentation provided to project and application users.
  • Data Security Regulation Compliance Support
  • Coordinate and communicate with Viasat’s Information Security team on requirements within and status of compliance with applicable cybersecurity regulation
  • Support on annual and ad hoc registrations with applicable data protection authorities
  • Coordinate with external legal counsel to compile legal requirements and updates and synthesize into practical internal tracking documentation

What you'll need

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education experience in a technology setting
  • 3-5+ years’ prior administrative or technical experience, preferably in a data protection and compliance in-house practice with a global technology, ISP, or telecom business, or in a consulting firm serving such companies
  • A general understanding of applicable compliance frameworks, e.g., NIST, ISO, and PCI
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; must be able to confidently facilitate meetings with groups of diverse stakeholders to fulfill meeting agenda objectives
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills with attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy, together with the ability to manage several simultaneous projects under deadline pressure.
  • Ability to take initiative and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced corporate environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel <5% of time

What will help you on the job

  • We prefer candidates within commutable distance to one of the following Viasat office locations - Carlsbad (CA), Washington DC, Boston (MA), Denver (CO). Work is mostly remote but may occasionally require travel.

  • Recognized privacy training and/or certification (IAPP)

  • Experience with contract negotiations, data governance, PIAs/DPIAs, and privacy automation tools, e.g., DSAR processing, data discovery and mapping, etc


Salary range

$70,500.00 - $113,000.00 / annually. For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $87,500.00- $131,500.00/ annually
